Attractions at Mermet Springs

Boeing 727 Airplane from the movie "U.S. Marshals"

 

  • The 727's tail is at a depth of 15 feet and its nose is at a depth of 50 feet

  • Sunk into the quarry March 21, 1998

  • Located along the Southwest wall

  • The airplane is hollow from tail to cockpit and can penetrated at multiple points

  • The plane is 22 tons, 135 feet long x 14 feet in diameter and was sunk into the quarry using 1 barge, 2 cranes, 2 low-boys and 2 police escorts

Railroad "Coal" Car

 

  • Depth at 55 feet

  • Sunk into the quarry in 2005

  • Located between the primary dock and the Boeing 727

  • The railroad coal car was given to Mermet Springs after a derailment near the quarry. The railroad gave the damaged coal car to the quarry after it blocked the entrance way for several days.

  • Weight = 45,000 lbs

  • A large crane was used to lower the box-car into the water

 

Submarine

 

  • Depth at 60 feet

  • Sunk into the quarry in 2006

  • Located at the north-west corner of the Train Box-car

  • A human-powered pedal submarine that was created as part of college competition. It sits unmanned waiting for explorers to find it

  • Was pushed off the primary dock and lowered into place

 

"Bruce" the Shark

 

  • Depth at 8 feet

  • Sunk into the quarry in 2004

  • Located between the motorcycle and the Petting Zoo

 

Ford Pickup Truck

 

  • Depth at 60 feet

  • Sunk into the quarry in 2007

  • Located near the 65 foot platform

  • Truck was pushed into the quarry by a front-end loader

Cessna Aircraft

  • Depth at 40 feet

  • Sunk into the quarry in 2002

  • Located near Cabin Cruiser Boat

  • The plane was pushed into the quarry from the swimming beach

 

Ambulance

 

  • Depth at 45 feet

  • Sunk into the quarry in 2004

  • Located near Boeing 727 Aircraft

  • The ambulance was rolled into the quarry

 

Firetruck

  • Depth at 50 feet

  • Sunk into the quarry in 2008

  • Located near Boeing 727 Aircraft and Train Box-car

  • Donated by Quincy fire department

  • After a complete cleaning and removal of engine parts and oil it was placed in the quarry

 

Petting Zoo

​

  • A menagerie of underwater critters including a skunk and a lion.

  • Depth at 12 feet

  • Sunk into the quarry 1998

  • Located near Swim Beach

 

Cabin Cruiser Boat

 

  • Depth at 40 feet

  • Added in 1998

  • Located between petting zoo and semi-truck

  • There is an underwater spring in this area. Wear your hood and gloves!

 

Semi-Truck International

  • Located near the Boeing 727's tail

  • Donated by Steve Weems of Mt. Vernon

  • Located on the platform in front of the bus
